Overview
Boku dake ga Inai Machi, also known as Erased, was one of the first thriller anime I came across. It might not be one of the mainstream titles, but it’s incredibly popular due to its short episode count and its ability to keep you on the edge of your seat! 😱 The best part? You don’t have to wait long for the story to kick in—the first episode alone ends with a cliffhanger that will have you instantly hooked. 🎣
Did you know that Erased was actually inspired by the author’s love for mystery novels? The creator, Kei Sanbe has mentioned in interviews that he was heavily influenced by classic crime and mystery stories, which is why the series has such a compelling narrative. Additionally, the anime’s unique storytelling style has been praised for its use of flashbacks and time jumps, which add depth and tension to the plot.
Why You Should Watch It
If you’re a fan of thrillers and time-travel stories, Erased is a must-watch! ⏳ With just 12 episodes, binge-watching it is a breeze. The main protagonist, Satoru Fujinuma, isn’t after grandiose goals; he simply wants to save those he cares about. Personally, I find this refreshing—sometimes, anime with overly ambitious goals can stray in directions that aren’t my favourite. The storytelling, character development, and animation are all top-notch, making this a thrilling ride from start to finish! 🎬
Erased was adapted into a live-action TV series in Japan, showcasing its popularity across different media! The live-action versions provide a slightly different take on the story, so if you’re interested in seeing how the narrative translates from anime to live action, they’re worth checking out. 🎥
What I Didn’t Like
From my perspective, the ending was a bit of a letdown. It felt rushed and didn’t give enough time to properly wrap up the story. While having only 12 episodes makes it easy to finish in one sitting, this is also one of its biggest flaws. 😕 The conclusion was crammed into the last 2-3 episodes, which didn’t allow for much depth and left some plot points feeling unresolved. For example, the entire 4th volume of the manga was adapted into just one episode, which is disappointing. 😔 The rooftop scene, in particular, was quite underwhelming.

Bottom Line
Erased is definitely one of the best short thriller/mystery anime out there! 🎉 The ending might not be everyone’s cup of tea, mainly because it feels rushed rather than poorly written. If you’re like me and want more after the anime, I highly recommend reading the manga to fully appreciate this beautiful story. 📚✨
Additionally, the manga includes several scenes and details that didn’t make it into the anime, providing a richer and more complete experience of Erased. It’s a great way to explore the story in more depth and understand the characters even better!
